There
are twenty-six members of the full-time faculty at Virginia
Seminary. While representing a spectrum of theological views
within the purview of classical Christian faith and tradition,
the faculty enjoys a high level of collegiality and
congeniality. All are committed to the Christian faith, to the
Church, to the vocation of theological education, and to
fostering the spiritual and intellectual growth of students. All
faculty are also committed to the heritage and purpose of the
Seminary as those are articulated in the Seminary catalogue
excellence in teaching, both the evangelical and catholic
heritage of the Seminary, and openness and freedom in
intellectual inquiry. Of the seventeen full-time teaching
faculty, fourteen have earned doctorates and two are in doctoral
programs. Their doctoral degrees are from Yale, Emory,
Princeton, Union, Harvard, Toronto, Florida State, Vanderbilt,
the University of Rochester and the University of Washington.
The faculty includes seventeen men and nine women. While clearly
maintaining its Episcopal identity with twenty-three
Episcopalians, the faculty also includes two Presbyterians and
one Lutheran. Nineteen faculty members are ordained, some with
considerable parish experience, and seven are lay persons. Two
are originally from outside the United States
and six others
have served overseas for extended periods.
Seven academic departments have two or more members. In
addition, the Seminary draws upon twenty or more adjunct
instructors during a normal academic year, utilizing the special
expertise of others in the area, especially in the areas of
pastoral theology and liturgics.
